CURRICULUM

The Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) Early Childhood Curriculum Project provides guidance to early childhood programs about curricular resources for preschool children that are State-recommended because they are aligned with the State’s prekindergarten and kindergarten curricular frameworks, also known as the Maryland College and Career Ready Standards.  The recommended list of resources also aligns with Healthy Beginnings: Supporting Development and Learning from Birth through Three Years of Age.  The State-recommended curricular resources also align with selected pedagogy standards of the guidelines of the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards.

The Creative Curriculum for Preschool is a MSDE recommended curriculum and Smarty Pants has used it for almost 20 years.  It aligns with Maryland Model for School Readiness, which also contributes to our framework of planning.

About Creative Curriculum

For over 30 years, early childhood educators have trusted The Creative Curriculum for Preschool to help them plan and implement successful, developmentally appropriate early childhood programs.  The Creative Curriculum for Preschool offers an essential foundation of knowledge to every teacher, whether new to the field or highly experienced.

The Creative Curriculum for Preschool:

  • summarizes the latest theory and most up-to-date research about children's development and learning.
  • discusses the five components of teaching children effectively: how children develop and learn; the learning environment; what children learn; caring and teaching; and partnering with families.
  • offers sections on guiding children's behavior and teaching intentionally and responsively.
  • provides expanded content for supporting dual-language learners
  • includes dedicated volumes for math and literacy.
  • defines and incorporates 38 objectives for development and learning that are predictors of school success and tied to state early learning standards

To ensure Kindergarten readiness The Creative Curriculum for Preschool will:

  • offer strategies for supporting children’s social–emotional development as they become comfortable with the transition from preK to kindergarten
  • help teachers answer children’s questions about what lies ahead
  • introduce the new ideas and experiences that come with the end of the preK year
  • guide teachers through helping children reflect on all that they’ve learned, and celebrating their achievements to help build confidence
  • provide support for strengthening family partnerships at the end of the year, which are vital to the successful shift of children becoming kindergarten students
  • Getting Ready for Kindergarten helps teachers discuss and answer questions such as “How is kindergarten like preschool?” and “How is it different?” and “How do we feel about going to kindergarten?”

A strong supplement to our curriculum is the “BIG DAY FOR PRE-K.”

We are committed to a strong emphasis on kindergarten readiness and we feel that “BIG DAY” offers a variety of resources to build kindergarten readiness skills and offers a framework for classroom management and the teaching of social-emotional skills. Other curricula resources are used to ensure that all learning standards have been met for the classroom.
